Equal Access Fund

The University of York has a long history of being a place of safety for people caught up in conflict and in need of refuge. We are committed to removing barriers to equality through education.

Our commitment to helping asylum seekers reflects the University’s core values of justice and equality. We are facing a major refugee crisis in Europe and the University of York will play its part in providing a safe and secure environment for displaced people to study, research and prosper.

Professor Koen Lamberts
Vice-Chancellor and President

Many asylum seekers have faced great challenges in their lives and know that an education is vital to securing a better future. However asylum-seeking students, even those who have spent many years in the UK, cannot access student loans to study and are classed as overseas students.

Our Equal Access Scholarships ensure that undergraduate students seeking asylum have access to a York education. Each Scholarship provides an annual living costs bursary of £10,660 and is matched by the University with a complete fee waiver.

Your gift will directly support students like Kawa, currently studying PPE, who was awarded an Equal Access Scholarship in September 2016.

I was not able to complete my studies because of the war in my country. I believe economists will be the key to rebuilding my destroyed country and I want to play a part in that endeavour, to build a better future for Syria.

This scholarship means so much to me, it means hope. It means a new beginning that will give me and others a better life.
