Santander Universities’ support of the University of York gives you the opportunity to make international connections, start a business, develop your career or fulfil your sporting ambitions.

Santander, through Santander Universities has been supporting higher education since 1996. Currently the bank has agreements with over 1,200 universities in 20 countries. In the UK 78 universities are partnering with Santander, including University of York which signed the first collaboration agreement between both institutions in 2011.

International travel

  • Santander International Connections awards offer grants for students and staff of up to £1,000 for ambitious and creative overseas projects in one of the 17 countries in the Santander network.

Enterprise competitions

  • York Business Challenge (formally Plan ENVY) is York’s business ideas competition, with a top prize of £2,000. The competition is open to students and recent graduates. This could be the springboard you need to get your business started.
  • Freelancer Challenge is your opportunity to win £1,000 for launching yourself as a freelancer. Whether you’re a student starting from scratch or a recent graduate running a freelancing business, you’re eligible.
  • Digital Leaders: students with a combination of creative and entrepreneurial talent in the digital field can access mentoring, networking and training, and a career development grant.
  • Entrepreneurship Awards – Santander’s annual national business pitching competition with cash prizes of up to £20,000. Open to all students and recent graduates.

Internships and career development

  • Enterprise internships give students and recent graduates the chance to work on their business idea full time for ten weeks, with a living allowance of £2,000, office space in the Ron Cooke Hub and professional business support.
  • York Community Consulting - solving real problems for charities and not for profit organisations YCC also offers York students challenging experiences that are highly valued by employers.
  • SME Internships offer funding to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to take on student and graduate interns. The programme is open to organisations with 250 employees or less and we can offer up to £1500 to support each paid internship placement.


  • Santander Elite Sports Scholarships: three awards of £5,000 are available for the best student athletes to enhance their sporting career while studying at York. Applications open in the Autumn term each year.
